How to restrict content on Microsoft devices (Windows 10 and Xbox One)

Block inappropriate websites on Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge browsers

  • Go to family.microsoft.com
  • Sign in with your Microsoft account
  • Find your child’s name (Microsoft Family Group needs to be created, instructions here)
  • Select Content restrictions
  • Web browsing > Block inappropriate websites > On
  • To always block specific sites, add their URLs under Always blocked.
  • To only allow specific websites, check the box next to Only allow these websites.

Block inappropriate apps, games & media online

  • Go to family.microsoft.com and sign in with your adult Microsoft account.
  • Find your child’s name and select Content restrictions.
  • Go to Apps, games & media  > Block inappropriate apps, games & mediaOn. Under Allow apps and games rated for > select the age limit for your child.
  • Add apps to the Always allowed under Content restrictions.
  • Block apps downloaded without parental permission on the Activity page. New apps need your permission, you can respond to kids’ requests from your email or on family.microsoft.com.
  • To monitor activity: Activity reporting  > On

Microsoft Store

  • Sign in to family.microsoft.com with your parent Microsoft account.
  • Find the child’s name > Spending.
  • Ask a parent > Needs organizer approval to buy things > On.
  • To approve or deny purchases through email: Email me when they get stuffOn.
     

X-Box

Web filtering:

  • Sign in on the console with an adult account.

  • Press the Xbox button  > System >  Settings  > Account > Family

  • Select the child account > Web filtering

  • Choose the level of web filtering. (Note: Specific websites can only be added to the Always allowed list on family.microsoft.com.)

Mature content:

  • Sign in with your parent account  
  • Press the Xbox  button > System > Settings  > Account > Family.
  • Select the child account > Access to content > select the appropriate age limit. By default, your child’s restrictions are set to their age on their Microsoft account.
  • To allow a blocked app or game your child requests: family.microsoft.com > Content restrictions > approve it and add it to the Always allowed
  • Block apps on the Activity page. They’ll need your permission to use it again, allow or deny requests from your email or on family.microsoft.com
  • To monitor their XBox activity: Activity page > Activity reporting On.   
 Downloads:
  • Sign in to the Xbox One with an adult’s Microsoft account.
  • Press the Xbox  button > Settings  > Account > Family settings > Manage family members > choose a child account.
  • Privacy & online safety > Xbox Live privacy > View details & customize > Buy & download > Ask a parent box > On. 
  • To change default child settings: Xbox Live privacy >  Child defaults or Teen defaults
